Featuring a strong performance from Geoffrey Rush, Shine succeeds in telling a compelling, inspirational story without resorting to cheap sentimentality.
Pianist David Helfgott, driven by his father and teachers, has a breakdown. Years later he returns to the piano, to popular if not critical acclaim.

The film tells the true story of gifted Australian pianist David Helfgott and was nominated for seven Oscars, with actor Geoffrey Rush winning for Best Actor. Helfgott was a pianist with a history of mental problems. A child prodigy in maths, chess and piano, David is driven hard by his tyrant of a father who forbids him to accept a scholarship offered by the great violinist Isaac Stern. Although he studies briefly in London (under tutor Cecil Parks played by John Gielgud), David has a nervous breakdown after performing Rachmaninoff’s daunting “Piano Concerto No. 3” (known as the “Rach 3”). Years later, David suffers a constant nervous stammer and has been reduced to playing in a bar – but his fortunes change after he falls in love.
